Martin Foyle scored both goals in a 2-1 win on his Vale debut

Martin Foyle

Martin signed for the Vale in June 1991 for a then club record fee of £375,000. During his time at the club, Martin scored 108 goals, which made him the club’s record post-war goalscorer until Tom Pope overtook this tally in 2020. He was voted player of the season in 1995 and 1999.

Some of his important goals include a late equaliser in a League Cup tie at Liverpool in 1991, two at Brighton which sealed promotion in 1994, and one in a game at Huddersfield Town in 1998 which saved the club from relegation.

When his playing days were over Martin turned to coaching and took over as Vale manager in 2004 before leaving in 2007 after a total of 16 years with the club. He subsequently had successful periods as manager of York City and Hereford United and then as chief scout at Scottish Premiership club Motherwell.  He is currently head of recruitment at Morecambe FC.

In May 2019, he was voted into the “Ultimate Port Vale XI” by members of the One Vale Fan supporter website.
