The 1950’s – Success and Optimism

When Prime Minister Harold Macmillan said in 1957 “most of our people have never had it so good” he could have been summarising the decade for Port Vale supporters. With the move to Vale Park, the winning of 2 championships (Div 3N in 1954 and Div 4 in 1959) and the epic FA Cup semi final appearance in 1954, this was the decade of change, success and optimism for Port Vale just as it was for Britain as a whole. Everest was conquered by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, the same year that saw the pomp and ceremony of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Such events helped to encourage a tremendous feelgood factor following the dark days of the Second World War. Locally the housing estate at Bentilee was constructed. Comprising almost 4,500 properties it was, at that time, one of the largest estates of its kind in Europe.
