Famous Players – The 1990’s
Neil Aspin
Iconic player of the 90’s
Neil Aspin was born in Gateshead and started his professional career with Leeds United where he played over 200 games before signing for the Vale in 1989 for a fee of £150,000. He immediately established himself as a firm favourite with the Vale supporters taking the player of the year award at the end of his first season with the club. He was then made club captain by Manager John Rudge.
Neil was a solid defender who could play at centre back or full back and was renowned as a good marker and solid tackler. He spent 10 years at the Vale throughout the 90’s and to many supporters he was the embodiment of what was a most successful decade for the club.
“Aspo was one of those guys who played with a very basic philosophy. Either the ball or the player could pass him but never both – and he often preferred to clear the player rather than the ball.”
